The Four-wire Resistive Touchscreen uses two layers of X- and Y-axis measurements.  The 4-wire technology uses both the upper and lower substrates in a touchscreen to determine the X- and Y-axis coordinate.  Usually the Y- axis uses the outer substrate, which is the flexible coversheet, as a uniform voltage gradient.  The inner or bottom substrate acts as the voltage probe.
