Before the introduction of LCD flat-panel technology, conventional CRT monitors were used almost exclusively as the computer monitor (except in notebook computers). There is a key difference between the technologies behind the CRT and LCD: CRTs require analog input signals while LCDs use digital signals. For analog LCD monitor, the analog signal from the VGA card should be converted into digital input signals because the LCD module only accept the digital signal.  The conversion from analog to digital cause the loss of the picture quality.  But when using Digital LCD monitors, the digital video signals generated by the chipsets in computers are fed directly to LCD module - skipping the conversion.  There is no need for the ADC (analog - digital convert) and various other chips used by analog LCD monitors, which not only save the quality of picture but also the cost.
